FBOs Around The Country/World
The acronym FBO stands for "Fixed Based Operator". It is a service center set apart from the main commercial terminals at airports. These smaller facilities service executive aircraft and serve as a waiting area for those passengers flying privately. There can often be more than one FBO at an airport — especially the larger hubs. These facilities can be located in close proximity to the commercial terminals or in some cases more than a mile or so away.
FBOs can range from little more than just a hangar to lush and luxurious facilities with over the top amenities. For example, J.A. Air Center at Aurora Municipal Airport in Sugar Grove, IL has a unique 25,000-square-foot arrival and departure canopy, spotless café and spacious waiting area.
Another beautiful facility is the Atlantic Aviation FBO at the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. This facility has an on-site Concierge, showers, on-site cafe, valet service and a heated hangar all in a beautiful ski lodge style setting.
FBO quality is often judged based on service on aircraft, facilities, passenger amenities as well as pilot/crew amenities and services. Undoubtedly all FBOs are unique as different locations require different features. Fixed-base operators are known to offer, but are not limited to aeronautical services such as:
- Charter and air-taxi options
- Aircraft storage
- Sale of aviation/jet fuel
- Aircraft sales
- Aircraft service and parts
- Line services for general aviation aircraft
- Air taxi and air charter operations.
- Pilot training
FBOs located at major international/national airports can be a convenient option for some trips – especially commercial connections. Veteran flyers, however, often choose to stay clear of larger hubs knowing that fees and fuel prices can at times be higher than those at smaller facilities.
